Institute for Safer Trucking Announces Kate Brown to the Board of Directors

Washington, D.C. — The Institute for Safer Trucking announces the appointment of Kate Brown to its Board of Directors.

The Institute for Safer Trucking's (IST) board of directors has elected a new member in Kate Brown, a long-time truck safety advocate and mother of Graham Brown, who was severely injured in a truck crash. The appointment of Brown brings the number of IST board members to eight. Kate brings a valuable viewpoint as a family member of a truck crash survivor.

“I have known Kate since I began working to make trucking safer nearly 10 years ago and am excited to work alongside someone who I have looked up to for so long, said Jen Walsh, principal at IST. “All of us at the Institute admire Kate’s ceaseless commitment to securing the best outcome for her son, Graham. Throughout her years of advocating to make trucking safer, she has become a leading voice on the need to increase the minimum insurance for motor carriers.”

“After Graham’s crash, I started to understand the importance of needing to increase the minimum insurance for motor carriers. Unfortunately, I had to learn it from the bills that started to pile up because the trucking company that hit my son only had the minimum insurance.” said Kate Brown. “I am excited to help IST educate the public and advocate for policy to improve road safety so that other families aren’t forced to learn the way that I did. Additionally, I am pleased to help represent and support families like me, who have family members who survived a crash, as well as those that lost their loved ones in a crash."

Kate's son Graham was critically injured when a trucker fell asleep at the wheel after staying up all night at a party. Graham has undergone 22 surgeries, 3 years of physical therapy, & is permanently, partially disabled.  The minimum insurance amount was not enough to cover Graham's ongoing care, so Kate's goal is to help prevent the devastating financial burdens placed on families due to insufficient insurance limits.

The Institute for Safer Trucking is a 501(c)(3) serving as a reliable resource for motor carriers and truck drivers to learn about safety improvements that can reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities, as well as for families of truck crash victims and survivors in need of help after their truck crash.
