Institute for Safer Trucking and Road Safe America Join Forces to Create a Stronger Voice for Truck Safety

Washington, D.C. – October 2, 2023 – The Institute for Safer Trucking (IST) and Road Safe America (RSA) today announced that they have joined forces to create a more powerful voice for truck safety. The merger, which will take effect immediately, will unite two of the nation's leading truck safety organizations under the IST banner.

Road Safe America, founded in 2004 by Steve and Susan Owings after their son, Cullum, was killed in a truck crash, has been at the forefront of truck safety advancements in the United States. The organization has been a committed champion for the commonsense requirement that all large trucks use the speed limiters that have already been built into their engines since the early 2000s. RSA also played a key role in advancing numerous truck safety policies, including the electronic logging device mandate, the electronic stability control mandate, and stronger underride protections on trucks and trailers.

“We are excited to join forces with Road Safe America to create a stronger and more effective voice for truck safety,” said John Lannen, Principal of IST. “RSA has a long and successful track record of advocating for policies that save lives, and we are honored to have Steve, Susan, and Pierce join our board. Their expertise and personal experience will make IST a stronger organization moving forward as we continue to educate the public about the need for updated insurance minimums, improved underride protections, and investments in life-saving driver-assistance technologies to reduce truck crashes in our country.”

“We are confident that this merger will allow us to make an even greater impact on truck safety,” said Steve Owings, Co-Founder of RSA. “The Institute for Safer Trucking is a highly respected organization with a proven track record of collaboration, and we are excited to work together to make our roads safer for everyone. As an IST board member, I look forward to our organization remaining engaged on the upcoming notice of proposed rulemaking for heavy trucks speed limiters and hope to see it finalized as quickly as possible.”

The merged organization will continue to be an educational resource for the public and advocate for meaningful changes to reverse the worsening trends in truck safety.
